Ruben Amorim has suffered six defeats in his first 11 games at Manchester United, the worst start from anyone in charge at Old Trafford since 1932.
The Portuguese head coach has not been shy in explaining that United's current project will take time to yield results. Since taking over in November, Amorim has said United need to "suffer", "survive" and ride the "storm" as he imparts changes to a side that had already observed their worst start to a Premier League season prior to his arrival.
Amorim has also admitted he does not know how quickly those changes will happen following United's dismal display and 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle on New Year's Eve. The United boss also alluded to the reality of a potential fight against relegation as a result of his side's recent slump.
It was a tall task for Amorim to take on the United job, replacing Erik ten Hag, but the early optimism under the former Sporting coach appears to be wearing thin as the reality of the team's existing drawbacks have begun to gnaw at Amorim's plans.
Amorim has now overseen 11 games in charge of United but how much has changed compared to Ten Hag's final 11 matches?
Amorim was asked following his side's Boxing Day 2-0 defeat at Wolves what his side was missing to learn his "new system" compared to his opponents, who were suggested to have already adapted to new boss Vitor Pereira's style.
"Their squad was built up for this system," Amorim replied bitingly.
A luxury that Amorim feels he doesn't have at United. That however hasn't stopped him from immediately teaching his philosophy.
United now set up in Amorim's famed 3-4-3 but with very little time to learn the new system, United's results have been inconsistent. Amorim's side have four wins in 11 games while losing six and drawing once.
Eight of those games were in the Premier League, where he's averaged one point per game so far. Ten Hag averaged 1.33 across his final eight.
United fans let their frustrations be known as Joshua Zirkzee was withdrawn after just 33 minutes against Newcastle.
The 23-year-old was met with jeers and boos as he jogged off the pitch in a speedy escape which has its roots in his unconvincing start to life at Old Trafford. The Netherlands international has scored two in eight Premier League appearances under Amorim, only amassing an expected goals (xG) total of 0.40. A similar issue persists with Amorim's other option to lead the line in Rasmus Hojlund.
The Dane has scored the most goals since Amorim's arrival with five across all competitions in 10 games; however, only one has come in the Premier League. Both strikers have cut frustrated figures up front, with Hojlund generating an xG of 0.95.
Across his final 11 games, Ten Hag's side scored 18 goals, while Amorim's side have managed 17 since he took over. As a result, with 1.54 goals per game, Amorim falls short of the average goals per game across Ten Hag's tenure, which was 1.82. United are also taking fewer shots than they did as Ten Hag's time at Old Trafford drew to a close, with the Dutchman's side taking 191 shots while Amorim's have taken 151.
As much as scoring goals has remained a struggle for United under new management, United have also found it tougher to keep clean sheets. United have kept one Premier League clean sheet under Amorim so far, while also conceding 21 goals during that time. Across Ten Hag's final 11 games, United conceded 14 and kept four clean sheets.
Under Ten Hag, United faced staunch criticism for the ease at which teams were able to take shots at Andre Onana's goal. This hasn't changed under Amorim, with United conceding 114 shots, while Ten Hag's side faced 115.
While United have had trouble winning matches and with goals at either end, the statistics show they have made some marginal progress on the ball. A change to Amorim's system has provided a better foundation for United to control possession. United now average 58.72 per cent possession as opposed to previously averaging 53.91 per cent.
Amorim's side also manage to string together marginally more passes per open-play sequence, with United managing 151 under previous management to now managing 183. Sequences are defined as passages of play that belong to one team and are ended by a defensive action, a stoppage in play or a shot.
With Amorim in charge, United are not only better passers, accumulating more successful passes during his first 11 games, but are also more likely to claim the ball higher up the pitch, winning possession in the attacking third of the pitch 69 times compared to 50 under Ten Hag.
There have been changes to the United's line-up as Amorim searches for the players capable of performing in his proposed system.
Of the players who played at least 90 minutes under Ten Hag, Harry Maguire, Amad Diallo and Manuel Ugarte emerge as the players who are now seeing greater minutes on the pitch.
Conversely, Marcus Rashford, who was omitted from four consecutive matchday squads, Alejandro Garnacho, Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans are among the players who are playing less.
Despite slight tweaks, the new-manager bounce that United fans would have looked forward to when Amorim arrived has not occurred. It now appears that, with United regressing in certain areas, Amorim has his work cut out to turn his side's fortunes sooner rather than later.
